So, you have a photoshoot coming up, huh? First and foremost, whatever it is for, I hope you are so excited to be documenting this chapter in your life. Whether it’s a couples session or a family session, just know that it’s a beautiful thing to document these little moments. As a Minnesota wedding and portrait photographer, I know the stress of having to plan a session – let alone decide what to wear! So if you’re wondering what to wear to your photo session, look no further. I’ve put together 4 actionable steps to help you feel confident + prepared for your photoshoot. Let’s dive in!
What to Wear for a Photoshoot | Minnesota Wedding + Portrait Photographer
#1. Color Scheme
The color of your outfit will impact the overall “feel” or vibe of the photo shoot. Blush pink, muted blue, cream, and white are soft and clean. Red, emerald green, mustard yellow, and black are bold and vibrant. A good rule of thumb when it comes to choosing what to wear would be to think of nature; you don’t normally see neon colors in nature. There are no right or wrong color schemes necessarily, but it is always wise to think about which colors compliment your hair and skin tones.
Once you figure out what you are wearing, you might think you’re done with this process. But what do you do if you are trying to coordinate your outfit with another person… or maybe even four or more other people?! This is where complimentary colors are so important! Thankfully, the days of “matchy-matchy” outfits are gone (like the blue jeans with white t-shirt photos that are in my old family album). Once you have a color scheme in mind, you can mix and match 2-4 complimentary colors together. Your photos will turn out so much better when everyone’s outfit flows and coordinates.
#2. Patterns & Logos
It’s fun to mix in a few patterns that compliment the outfits others are wearing, but make sure to use them sparingly. Patterns can be distracting in your final image if overused. However, a few simple patterns (i.e. small vertical stripes or plaid pattern) can visually break up blocks of solid colors, as long as they follow the same color scheme.
Try to avoid shirts that have large logos, text, branding, characters, etc. as they distract from the focal point (*ahem, YOU) and can also really age your portraits.
#3. Accessories & Layers
Accessories and layers can make an average outfit feel more complete. Sweaters and jackets can be added for a completely different look. Include scarves, hats, or jewelry to add even more variety. You have the ability to give your session a completely different feel, without having to change your entire wardrobe! By adding or removing certain accessories or layers from your outfit, you can change the entire style.
However, for parents with young children… extra accessories may overwhelm their small frame, or they may become a distraction. Keep your kiddos comfortable – it’s one less thing to worry about!
#4. Your Personality
Think about the location and background of your photos, as this may guide your outfit decisions and the style you are going for. For example, you may not want to wear a plaid shirt with jeans if you are taking classy pictures “out on the town”. Instead, a more formal (or edgy) look might be a better fit.
The season and weather are also factors when choosing what to wear (especially if you are taking pictures in the middle of winter in Minnesota). No matter what the season or the location, wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Ultimately, your photo session is all about you and YOUR personality!
